  1. A flexible coupling used to join rotating
  2. shafts, for example, the propeller shaft in a
  3. car. In a typical universal joint the ends of
  4. the shafts to be joined end in U-shaped
  5. yokes. They dovetail into each other and
  6. pivot flexibly about an X-shaped spider. This
  7. construction allows side-to-side and
  8. up-and-down movement, while still
  9. transmitting rotary motion.
